The Ayodhya plateau in Purulia is where Bengal keeps its rock: Matha and Bagmundi have the state's only serious sport-climbing crags, with routes bolted on granite faces above sal forest. Upper and Lower Dam sit on the plateau as part of a pumped-storage scheme, with a road between them. In March the palash and simul trees flower and the whole plateau goes orange and red, which is when the Chhau dance villages nearby are also most active. Marble Lake and Bamni Falls complete a two-day loop.
