A seven-storey palace built in 1620 for a Mughal emperor's visit that never happened, and never occupied since. You can walk all of it, alone.
Bir Singh Deo built this palace at Datia in 1620 to host Jahangir. The emperor never stayed. Nobody has lived in it since. What remains is a square, five-storey-above-ground and two-below stone block of interlocking courtyards, hanging corridors, cantilevered balconies and stairways that cross above each other without touching, with zero furniture to distract from the structure. Percy Brown called it one of the finest examples of Hindu domestic architecture. It stands 75km from Gwalior on the main line and gets a fraction of Orchha's crowd.
