The Mayurakshi river was dammed at Massanjore in 1955 with Canadian assistance, which is why the local name stuck. The reservoir now spreads for kilometres between low forested hills in the Santhal Parganas, with a road along the crest and boating from the shore. The surrounding country is Santhal, with weekly haats and villages of painted mud houses. A village of 18th-century terracotta temples 30km away makes the natural pairing.
