A nine-storey stepwell descending into the ground below the Neemrana fort, derelict, unlit and almost never visited.
Everyone photographs Neemrana Fort. Almost nobody walks the 500 metres down into the village to the baoli, which is nine storeys deep, 170 steps down, and one of the largest stepwells in India. It was built in 1760 and abandoned; there is no railing, no light at the lower levels and water at the bottom. The geometry from the top is severe and repeating in a way that reads better in a photograph than almost any monument in the state. On the Delhi-Jaipur highway, two hours from Delhi.
