A 3rd-century BCE rock-cut chamber with tiered stone seating and an acoustic design, argued to be the oldest surviving theatre in India.
Cut into Ramgarh hill, Sitabenga has semi-circular rows of stone seats facing a raised stage-like platform, with a Brahmi inscription in Magadhi that reads as a line of love poetry, dated to around the 3rd century BCE. Archaeologists have argued for decades that it is a natyashala, which would make it older than any surviving theatre structure in India. Jogimara cave next door carries painted figures that may be among the oldest surviving murals in the country. Kalidasa is locally believed to have written Meghadutam here. There is no crowd, no ticket queue and very little signage.
