Takdah was built as a British cantonment above Darjeeling and still has a run of the original bungalows along its lanes, some restored as heritage homestays, set among the Takdah, Gielle and Runglee Rungliot tea estates. There is an orchid centre, a Buddhist monastery, and forest walks down to Tinchuley and Lamahatta. What it does not have is Darjeeling's traffic, which is 30km and a world away. Go for the tea estate walks and the bungalow verandahs rather than for sights.
