King Dharmapala founded Vikramshila around 800 CE as a counterweight to Nalanda, and it grew to over a hundred teachers and a thousand students, specialising in tantric Buddhism; Atisa, who carried Buddhism to Tibet, was its abbot. Khilji destroyed it around 1200. The excavation reveals a monumental cruciform stupa at the centre of a square of 208 monk cells, laid out with a geometric precision that reads best from height. It is 50km from Bhagalpur on the Ganga, and it is empty.
