Around 200 sandstone temples from the 8th-10th century, packed into one ravine and painstakingly rebuilt stone by stone from a rubble field.
In the Chambal ravines 35km north of Gwalior, the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty built roughly 200 small sandstone temples in a single valley. An earthquake and centuries of neglect flattened them. Starting in 2005 the ASI, negotiating with dacoits who then controlled the ravines, reassembled about 80 of them from scattered blocks like a jigsaw. The result is an entire temple city in miniature, and on most weekdays you will have it to yourself. Padavali Garhi is 2km away, a 10th-century temple mandapa enclosed inside a later Jat fort gate with some of the densest relief carving in north India on its ceilings, and Mitaoli is 10km on, which makes all three one morning loop.
