Ratnagiri, with Udayagiri and Lalitgiri nearby, forms Odisha's Diamond Triangle, a Vajrayana Buddhist complex active from the 5th to the 13th century and possibly the Puspagiri that Xuanzang described. What sets Ratnagiri apart is preservation: Monastery 1 has an intact and extraordinarily carved chlorite doorway, plus a colossal Buddha, and hundreds of votive stupas cover the hill. Lalitgiri produced a relic casket that may hold the Buddha's remains. It is 100km from Bhubaneswar and comprehensively skipped by the Konark-Puri circuit.
