An 11th-century temple abandoned mid-build, with its earthen construction ramp and the architect's working drawings still cut into the surrounding rock.
Raja Bhoj started this Shiva temple around 1035 CE and it was never finished. That is exactly why it matters: the earthen ramp used to haul stones up is still in place, and the master masons' plans for shikharas, pillars and mouldings are engraved on the flat rock around the site, the only surviving medieval Indian architectural drawings of their kind. Inside stands a 7.5ft lingam cut from a single rock on a 21ft platform. Twenty-eight kilometres from Bhopal, and quiet on weekdays.
