Red laterite badlands cut into gullies and pinnacles by the Shilabati river, called the Grand Canyon of Bengal.
At Gangani the Shilabati has eroded a bank of red and ochre laterite into a landscape of ravines, spires and cliffs that looks nothing like the rest of Bengal, which is why the canyon comparison stuck despite the modest scale. The colour at sunset is the reason to time it late. The Mahabharata locally associates the site with the Pandavas' exile. It is at Garhbeta, about 150km from Kolkata, and it is a picnic spot for the region rather than a destination for anyone else.
