Built by King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty in 1026 CE, Modhera was designed so the first rays of the rising sun struck the deity inside on the spring and autumn equinoxes. The temple compound includes the Surya Kund - a massive rectangular stepped tank lined with 108 miniature shrines arranged in perfect symmetry. Recently lit at night.
