A shallow wetland directly on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway pulling in over 250 bird species, and almost no birders.
Nawabganj, formally the Chandrashekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary, is a shallow seasonal lake beside the Lucknow-Kanpur road with reed beds and open water. More than 250 species have been recorded, with winter bringing greylag and bar-headed geese, pintail, teal, shoveler and a good gull and tern list, and the resident sarus crane present year-round. There are watchtowers and a small boat. It requires no permit, no guide and no planning, and sits an hour from a city of three million that mostly does not know it is there.
