Sonagiri, the golden peak, holds about 77 temples on the hill and another 26 below, built from the 9th century onward and kept uniformly whitewashed. Digambara Jains regard it as a siddha-kshetra where Nangkumar and others attained liberation. Pilgrims climb barefoot; the effect from the top is a field of white shikharas against dry Bundelkhand scrub. It is 15km from Datia and combines with the palace into one day.
